Why we built it
Most people sit somewhere between “this is probably nothing” and “should I get this looked at?” — often for weeks. Dermatrix is built for that gap: a fast, judgment-free way to get informed about a skin concern before deciding whether to seek professional care. It is a starting point, not a verdict.
The technology behind it
Dermatrix is powered by MedGemma, an open medical AI model developed and released by Google, which we apply specifically to skin. On a dermatology benchmark (US-DermMCQA) the model scores around 72% — well above a general-purpose model of the same size — but a benchmark is a reference point, not a measure of how precisely it reads your individual photos.
Dermatrix is an independent service that uses this model; it is not made, endorsed, or reviewed by Google. And we want to be upfront about one thing in particular: your assessment is generated automatically by AI. It is not reviewed by a doctor or any other medical professional. We think being honest about that matters more than sounding authoritative.
What Dermatrix is not
- It is not a medical service and does not provide a diagnosis or medical advice.
- It is not a substitute for evaluation by a qualified dermatologist or physician.
- It cannot assess possible skin cancer, new or changing moles, or anything needing a physical exam, lab tests, or a biopsy — please see a doctor for those.
- Its read depends on your photos: image quality and lighting affect what it can observe.
Your privacy
We are privacy-first by design. We never ask for your real name; your email is hashed after verification, so it is never stored in plain text; and your photos are kept in a private, access-controlled place and deleted within 24 hours of analysis.
