A New Sunscreen Ingredient in the US (Bemotrizinol), Explained

Something changed in US sunscreen for the first time in decades

On June 9, 2026, the US Food and Drug Administration added an ingredient called bemotrizinol to the list of active ingredients allowed in over-the-counter sunscreens. The announcement of the final order was published in the Federal Register the next day.

That sounds like a small regulatory footnote. It isn't. Bemotrizinol is the first new active ingredient added to the US over-the-counter sunscreen monograph since the late 1990s — a gap of roughly a quarter-century during which the ingredient was in routine use across Europe and much of Asia.

If you have ever read that "European sunscreens have filters the US doesn't," this is the most prominent one on that list, and it is the reason a search like bemt sunscreen has started showing up.

Here is what actually changed, what it means for the bottle you buy, and — just as importantly — what it doesn't change.

What bemotrizinol is

Bemotrizinol goes by several names, which is part of why it's confusing:

They are all the same molecule.

It is an organic (often called "chemical") UV filter — the same broad family as avobenzone or octocrylene, rather than a mineral filter like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Three properties are why formulators have wanted it:

  • It is broad spectrum on its own. It absorbs across both UVB and UVA wavelengths, rather than covering one and needing a partner for the other.
  • It is photostable. Some UV filters degrade in sunlight — the very condition they're meant to work in. Bemotrizinol holds up.
  • It absorbs into the body at low levels. The FDA specifically noted low absorption through the skin in its announcement.

There is also a genuinely useful side effect: bemotrizinol helps stabilise other filters. A 2001 study by Chatelain and Gabard in Photochemistry and Photobiology found that adding it prevented the photodegradation of avobenzone — the main UVA filter in a great many US sunscreens — in a dose-dependent way, keeping SPF and UVA protection more consistent through sun exposure. So its value isn't only what it blocks itself; it's that it can make the rest of the formula hold its protection longer.

What the FDA actually decided

The specifics matter, because a lot of the coverage has been loose about them:

  • The FDA amended OTC Monograph M020, the rulebook for non-prescription sunscreens, to add bemotrizinol at concentrations up to 6 percent.
  • The agency considers it generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE) for adults and children 6 months of age and older.
  • The process began with a request from a manufacturer, a proposed order in December 2025, a public comment window, and then the final order in June 2026.

That's the whole decision. Note what it is not: it is not an approval of any particular product, brand, or SPF claim.

What this doesn't mean

This is where honest framing matters more than excitement.

It doesn't mean US sunscreens were failing you. The American Academy of Dermatology's recommendation hasn't moved: broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, water-resistant. A sunscreen meeting that standard, applied generously and reapplied, protects you. The old US filter list was narrow, not broken.

It doesn't mean bemotrizinol sunscreens prevent more skin cancer. There is no head-to-head evidence that a person using a bemotrizinol-containing sunscreen correctly ends up with less sun damage than a person using a well-formulated existing sunscreen correctly. The realistic benefit is formulation quality — more elegant textures, better UVA coverage per unit of filter, less need to stack multiple filters — which matters mostly because people actually wear the sunscreens they like.

It doesn't settle the mineral-versus-chemical argument. Bemotrizinol is an organic filter. If you prefer mineral sunscreens for sensitive skin or personal reasons, nothing here changes that choice.

It doesn't arrive instantly. Permission to use an ingredient is the start of a product development cycle, not the end of one. Reformulating, stability testing, SPF testing, and manufacturing take time, and companies will roll it into some products before others.

What to actually do about it — which is mostly nothing

The right response to this news is anticlimactic, and that's fine:

  1. Keep wearing the sunscreen you already have. Broad spectrum, SPF 30+, water resistant. See sunscreen, explained if you want the fundamentals.
  2. Fix the application, not the ingredient. Most people under-apply badly. The AAD's benchmark is about one ounce — a shot glass — for the whole body, and at least a teaspoon for the face, reapplied roughly every two hours and after swimming or sweating.   3. Don't forget the bits you skip. Ears, the back of the neck, the tops of the feet, and your scalp and part line.
  4. Remember sunscreen is one layer of several. Shade, timing, and clothing do a lot of the work. And no sunscreen makes UV exposure a good idea — there is no such thing as a safe tan.
  5. If you're shopping anyway, the same selection logic applies as always — for example, choosing a sunscreen for oily or acne-prone skin.

The thing sunscreen still can't do

Sun protection reduces your risk. It does not eliminate it, and it does not monitor your skin for you.

See a doctor — not a bottle of sunscreen — about:

  • A new, changing, or asymmetric mole, or one that looks different from your others
  • A sore that doesn't heal, or a spot that bleeds, crusts, or keeps coming back
  • A dark streak under a fingernail or toenail
  • Any rough, scaly patch that persists — that can be an actinic keratosis

Common questions

  • Can I buy a sunscreen with bemotrizinol in the US right now?

    Not necessarily today. The FDA's decision changes what companies are *allowed* to put in an over-the-counter sunscreen — it doesn't put finished products on shelves. Brands still have to reformulate, test, manufacture, and distribute, which takes time. Expect it to show up gradually, in some products rather than all of them. Meanwhile, the sunscreen already in your cabinet still works.

  • Is bemotrizinol the same thing as Tinosorb S or 'BEMT'?

    Yes. Bemotrizinol is the ingredient's common name; its full chemical name is bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, often shortened to BEMT; and Tinosorb S is a trade name it has been sold under internationally. If you have used a European or Asian sunscreen and seen any of those on the label, you have already used it.

  • Does this mean US sunscreens were unsafe or ineffective before?

    No, and that's worth saying plainly. A broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, water-resistant sunscreen used properly has been — and still is — effective sun protection. The honest gap was one of *variety*: the US list of permitted filters had not been updated since the late 1990s, so formulators here had fewer tools than their counterparts abroad. More options is a good thing. It is not a verdict on the old ones.

  • Is bemotrizinol safe for children?

    The FDA considers it generally recognized as safe and effective for adults and children 6 months of age and older, at concentrations up to 6 percent. For babies under 6 months, the guidance has not changed: keep them out of direct sun and use shade and clothing rather than sunscreen as the main strategy. Ask your pediatrician about any product you plan to use on an infant.
